There has never been a better time for physicians and practice management professionals to consider e-prescribing.
The U.S. Senate recently passed a bill to give Medicare the ability to reward physicians for acquiring and using electronic prescribing or “e-prescribing” technology as a replacement for paper prescriptions. The Medicare Improvement for Patients and Providers Act will provide positive Medicare payment incentives of up to 2% for practitioners who use qualified e-prescribing systems in 2009 through 2013, and a reduction in payments of up to 2% to providers who fail to e-prescribe by 2012.
You should also be aware that as of October 1, 2008 all written Medicaid prescriptions must be on a tamper-resistant blank. Electronic prescriptions are excluded from this requirement.
The information on this site is intended to help illustrate how e-prescribing can improve practice efficiency while enhancing safety. By completing a brief technology assessment, you can generate a customized Guide to Selecting E-Prescribing Technology that includes listings of e-prescribing solutions that meet your stated needs, questions to ask the vendors as you begin evaluating various solutions and an estimate of the time and money you are currently spending annually managing the refill authorization process. You can also request additional product information/demos directly from the site.
